A Cold War battleground in the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen was divided between the Soviet-backed south and the West-supported north from the 1960s to 1990, when the two parts united. A major maritime trade route in the early 20th century, the country was an Arab hub for innovation and business. Today, it is at the theater of a proxy battle between Saudi Arabia and Iran. A civil war since 2011 has left the country divided between multiple militia and terror groups, including ISIS.
