South Sudan

The world's youngest country, South Sudan has had a particularly arduous journey to independence. Throughout the 20th century, it had to deal not just with the British Empire, but also with Egypt and Sudan, both of which eyed its territory. Now independent, the country is trapped in a civil war that shows no signs of abating. But it is also home to the White Nile, which passes through the capital, Juba, and to tropical forests and grasslands.
