Sierra Leone

The West African country was a central point of departure and return for African slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Devastated by a civil war in the 1990s, Sierra Leone is trying to rebuild its economy and infrastructure, but continues to rely heavily on agriculture and the export of minerals like diamonds. Despite its small area, the country is home to diverse fauna and to one of the world's best-known chimpanzee sanctuaries.
