Guyana & Suriname

Guyana was a British colony, and Suriname was ruled by the Dutch, but both built their modern societies on the backs of indentured labor shipped from India, 8,000 miles away, in the 19th century. Today, Indian-origin people are the largest ethnic group in both countries. They are among the poorest nations in South America — but while Suriname's economy is in a steep recession, Guyana's is among the fastest-growing in the Americas.
