The birthplace of the modern man, Ethiopia is the world's most populous landlocked nation. Only Nigeria has a larger population in Africa. One of only two African nations to escape long-term colonization during the late 19th-century European "Scramble for Africa," Ethiopia was the world's fastest growing economy in 2017. Plagued for decades by civil wars, regional conflicts and deep ethnic divisions, the country is now beginning to forge a fresh path under a new leader who is promising reforms and is seeking peace with neighbors.
