Costa Rica

Among the few sovereign nations without a standing army — it was abolished in 1949 — Costa Rica has for decades been a beacon of peace and stability in an otherwise volatile and unstable region. A clean energy exemplar, the country by 2016 was relying on renewable sources for 98 percent of its electricity needs. The country has devoted a quarter of its land to national parks and protected areas, the highest proportion in the world.
