Albania & Kosovo

The Balkan neighbors have shared large parts of their history, including decades of tensions with Yugoslavia and then Serbia. But while Albanian revolutionaries ended German occupation to gain independence in 1944, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Albania, now a democracy after 46 years of communism, is increasingly attracting tourism. Kosovo, recognized as independent by a majority of nations, though not by Serbia, has a steadily growing economy that's avoided the crises that have engulfed many other countries in Europe.
