The mostly mountainous country has historically stood at the crossroads of Slavic, Germanic and Romance cultures, and has been part of a series of larger kingdoms — from the Roman Empire to Austria-Hungary. It was part of the erstwhile Yugoslavia, gained independence in 1991, and in 2007 became the first former communist nation to join the eurozone. An advanced economy, the country has among the highest per capita incomes of former socialist states. Some might also know it as the former home of Melania Trump.
