The Science of Predicting Disease Outbreaks

Since last December, an Ebola outbreak has spread from villages in the forests of southeastern Guinea to Liberia and beyond — with no signs of waning. Across the two countries, Ebola has killed numerous people, and the numbers only continue to rise. The devastating disease spreads through blood, saliva and other bodily fluids. Intense weakness and fever give way to diarrhea, vomiting, and internal and external bleeding.

Sniffing Out Disease With Breath Tests

Is that heart disease on your breath? Soon, a medical gadget might tell you. Researchers are devising a new generation of devices that can “sniff out” breast cancer, tuberculosis, heart failure and other ailments based on your “breathprint,” the molecular signature in the air you exhale. These devices are like Breathalyzers, except they detect disease, not alcohol — and they could well revolutionize the costly, cumbersome field of diagnostics. Forget waiting days for biopsy results or haggling with your insurance company for a CT scan. Breath diagnostics would deliver low-cost results in a matter of minutes.
