It’s one of the biggest yet least heralded trends of our time: Violent crime has plunged since the mid-1990s, and murders have fallen to levels not seen since the 1960s. Which makes it all the more alarming when crime spikes back up, as it has in Baltimore and other major U.S. cities this year; in July, in fact, Baltimore saw more murders than it has in 43 years. In an appearance on CNN’s New Day program, OZY CEO Carlos Watson discusses the apparent comeback of urban murder, why it’s happening now and federal countermoves that range from embedding federal agents with local police to prison and sentencing reform.
