Home to the ruins of Carthage, from where the Phoenicians dominated the Mediterranean more than two millennia ago, Tunisia retains a unique identity and outsize influence for a small nation. It was in Tunisia that the Arab Spring started in 2010 before spreading across North Africa and the Middle East. Tunisia was also the only affected nation to emerge from that upheaval with a stable democracy.
