The Gambia & Cape Verde

Two of Africa's smallest nations, the neighboring nations of the Gambia and Cape Verde have traversed distinct journeys. A former British colony, the Gambia — surrounded by Senegal on three sides — has had rare postindependence stability with just three rulers in half a century, but 23 of those years were under a dictator. One of Africa's poorest nations, it stands in contrast with Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony that is economically far better off and routinely rates among Africa's most democratic nations.
