A protectorate first of the British and then of India, Sikkim became a full-fledged state in the world's largest democracy in 1975. Surrounded by Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal on three sides, it is India's least populous state. Mount Kanchenjunga, India's highest peak and the world's third-tallest, is in Sikkim.
