One of the world's largest exporters of natural gas, Qatar has the world's highest per capita GDP at purchasing power parity. Its economy — and society — run on foreign labor that constitutes 90 percent of the workforce. Through its sovereign wealth fund, the country is a major investor in the U.S., Europe and Asia. It is increasingly also pursuing a foreign policy independent of Saudi Arabia and is at the center of a rift tearing at the Arab world.
