The country that established the world's first global empire, Portugal once ruled territories as distant as Macau and Brazil. After years of rule by a dictator — much like its Iberian cousin Spain — Portugal emerged as a democracy in the mid-1970s. The country suffered a major economic collapse at the tail end of the Great Recession. Today, Portugal has turned its economy around while shunning austerity measures, offering an example to others. It's a major soccer power, but has never won the World Cup.
