The landlocked South American country has witnessed long decades of dictatorship since it gained independence from the Spanish two centuries ago but is today a democracy where liberals and conservatives have swapped power in recent years. Paraguay is home to the world's largest drinking water reservoir — the Guarani Aquifer — and is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of soybean, corn, stevia, wheat and beef.
