Nicaragua

The largest country by area in the Central American isthmus, Nicaragua is a land of volcanoes, lakes and rainforests. Its economy depends heavily on tourism. Occupied by the U.S. from 1912 until 1933, the country has long been a theater of American intervention, including Washington's support of a dictatorship for half a century and supplying military aid to the Contra rebels against the Sandinista regime in the 1980s. The country is witnessing widespread civil unrest again, this time against president and longtime leader Daniel Ortega.
