Nepal & Bhutan
Sandwiched between India and China, the Himalayan nations of Nepal and Bhutan have proud histories and future ambitions. Nepal was the one South Asian nation that escaped colonial rule. Home to Mount Everest, the world's tallest peak, Nepal abolished the monarchy a decade back but has had 11 prime ministers since then, and struggles for stability. Also in 2008, Bhutan moved to a democracy overseen by a monarch. But it has transitioned much more slowly than Nepal and remains relatively isolated.
