The island nations of the Maldives, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Comoros together span much of the Indian Ocean, from southeast Africa to the Bay of Bengal, and sit on vital maritime trade routes. It's not surprising then that these nations have witnessed the crosscurrents of colonialism and immigration for centuries, with French and British rulers, Indian and African indentured workers all leaving their imprint. Today, tourists throng the white sand beaches and turquoise waters that these islands offer.
