Dominican Republic

Spain's first colony in the Americas, present-day Dominican Republic is where Christopher Columbus first set foot in the region, in 1492. The country, annexed for 22 years by Haiti and twice occupied by the U.S., is today Central America's largest economy. Home to the world's second-largest gold mine, the Dominican Republic is the most visited country in the Caribbean, and has produced the most foreign players in Major League Baseball.
