Although rich in oil and diamonds, the southern African nation remains a poor and deeply unequal society. The last European colony in Africa, the country slipped into a brutal civil war almost immediately after independence in 1975. The war is over, but a single party has ruled the country for four decades. Angola has beaches on its Atlantic coast, a sub-Saharan desert in the south and a network of rivers that crisscross its territory.
