The title of Chief Design Officer (CDO) is fairly new. In fact, six years ago, it didn’t even exist at all.
“Engineering and design are something that should happen simultaneously,” says Mari Kussman, the chief innovation officer at New Lab, a collaborative workspace in Brooklyn for companies in fields like robotics and artificial intelligence. “User experience is design, and ergonomics is design, and we need to start thinking about design while we engineer products.” It’s a philosophy that has started to infiltrate the boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies, which are increasingly bringing on designers to lead innovation in ways never seen before.
