    Pope Begs Forgiveness on Ireland Visit

    During the closing Mass of a tense two-day visit to the predominantly Catholic nation, Pope Francis asked hundreds of thousands of worshippers for forgiveness for the abuse scandals and institutional failures that have dogged the church for decades. Yet he later told reporters he wouldn’t comment on an 11-page letter by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, a former Vatican diplomat, claiming the pontiff knew in 2013 that American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was a sexual predator but “covered for him to the bitter end.” Viganò has called on Francis to resign.
