Africa’s New Fitness Hub: The Former Capital of Short-Lived Biafra
In 1967, the Republic of Biafra briefly declared independence from Nigeria during a brutal 30-month civil war that claimed almost 2 million lives. Now Enugu, Biafra’s erstwhile capital, has been overtaken by a personal fitness craze. Its number of gyms has more than doubled in the past decade, the city’s main square has become a hub for exercise gear and meet-ups, and it hosts Nigeria’s only half-marathon. Many in Enugu are now hoping this new identity will stick around for the long run.
