    Chelsea Handler Curates for OZY

We strive to ensure that OZY readers hear from a wide range of voices and perspectives — a particularly important mission given today’s polarized political climate. That’s why we reach out to interesting, impactful figures from around the globe and across the political spectrum.

Today, Chelsea Handler joins the ranks of OZY guest editors like Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Marco Rubio, Karl Rove and Hasan Minhaj to share the news that’s most on her mind. This year, the comedian, actress, writer and producer adds political activist to her list of attributes. Chelsea Lately’s star raises awareness for women’s rights and Syrian refugees, and she’s working to get out the vote ahead of the 2018 midterms. The New Jersey native had plenty of opportunity as the youngest of six to perfect her craft: being heard. And today you can also hear her live on the OZY Fest stage.

True or False, Tech Moguls Are Infallible?

Elon Musk should be ashamed of himself. He libeled a diver working to save children’s lives, calling him a “pedo” (without cause) — all because the man didn’t think the Tesla founder’s submarine could safely save kids trapped in an underwater cave. Worry about making better cars first. My friend’s Tesla caught on fire the other day, and I gave mine back and will never get another one. Silicon Valley billionaires suffer from chronic hubris: They think they’re infallible and that they can say whatever they want. We need to put the brakes on such lunacy.

White People, Say ‘Bye-Bye’ to Power

Hear that? It’s the death rattle of American racism. White people can gerrymander all they want, but they’ll soon be the minority. As long as people keep voting, Whites with power are going to fall. Sadly, racism in the U.S. will probably get worse before it gets better. Every day something horrifying and offensive gets said, or another innocent Black male is shot. But non-White and mixed-race numbers are only going to grow — and they’re going to head to the polls. Buckle up.

How Can Anyone Find Family Separations Acceptable?

This is bordering on evil. The first thing I thought when I heard about families being separated at the U.S.-Mexico border was the Holocaust, with images of Jewish parents being told their kids were simply being marched to the showers by Nazi soldiers. This is never something I thought could happen in the United States in 2018. You don’t have to be a parent to imagine how horrific it must feel to be separated from your children in such brutal ways.

Think of How Mother Earth Will Look to Future Generations

Being inappropriate is my trademark, so will sexual favors work? Whatever it takes to get these people in power to stop denying climate change. To the new EPA chief — who replaced the even more inappropriate Scott Pruitt — I’d like to say: You have children, and your children will have children, so think about how they want to grow up. Even Syria, despite its ongoing war, has signed on to the Paris climate agreement. This is a country at war with itself, and yet they’ve seen fit not to battle Mother Nature. So why are we?

We Already Won This Hard-Fought Battle

I’m good at battle cries, so hear me out. Cases involving LGBTQ rights and abortion rights have already been decided by the Supreme Court. Yet some in Congress want to reverse these decisions while doing nothing about kids getting shot in school. They’re OK with gun-wielding students and arming teachers to fight them, but they take issue with a woman’s right to choice. If you watch Sacha Baron Cohen’s show, it seems some would happily even arm 5-year-olds. We already won these fights; don’t sit down now as some seek to unravel them.

  7. Briefly From OZY: Organic Gun Battle, Putin Aversion and Enemies’ Enemy

Know This:  One woman is dead after a man entered a Los Angeles Trader Joe’s, took hostages and exchanged gunfire with police Saturday evening. Newly released court documents indicate FBI investigators thought Russia was trying to recruit then-Trump campaign adviser Carter Page in 2016. And Iran is threatening to block oil shipments of other Gulf nations if its own are embargoed.

Bad News Bearers: “They brought with them words of alarm from Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, as well as from a host of congressional leaders and supporters of the president for whom Trump’s public praise of Putin proved to be a bridge too far.” – an account of Trump administration luminaries’ efforts to convince the president to retract his Helsinki statements.

Last Resort: Members of the White Helmets, the search-and-rescue organization nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, found themselves trapped in southwestern Syria as government forces closed in. That left only one avenue of escape for the group, which Russia and Syria label jihadist sympathizers: Israel, whose military has reportedly just evacuated some 800 members and their families to safety in Jordan.

Sometimes Being Healthy Is … Counterintuitive

Opposites attract, apparently. All the things you don’t think should work, healthwise, seem to do the trick for me. My nutritionist has me on a program eating five to six small meals a day. Intermittent fasting works for a lot of people, but it’s just not a long-term solution. I’m on a program called Venice Nutrition, which helps you drop weight and gives you energy. Today, there are more and more high-quality proteins on the market, like turkey jerky, that make this easy. And, no, french fries and vodka are not on the menu.

Whistler Is More Than Just a Vacation Town

It’s far from a last resort. Last year, I visited the town for a month because I wanted to escape daily politics. I needed to find a way to channel my outrage and do something effective, rather than just bitching from bed at CNN. Whistler in British Columbia was the perfect cure: It’s the most beautiful place in the world, and it’s the best place to ski. That’s especially true now that climate change is bringing different weather patterns to North America, but you can always count on snow in Whistler.

We Need to Understand Each Other

Let’s look at racism in black and white. I’m doing a Netflix documentary on White privilege, so I’m reading a lot of Black authors, including James Baldwin. Everything Baldwin says is so pertinent today. It seems like Black people need to have this conversation every generation, as do women, about their rights. But at the same time, more people are starting to think about what it’s like to be a person of color. It’s really important for everyone to learn from Baldwin’s work and to try and understand experiences unlike their own.

All Women Need a Good Gay Man in Their Lives

I love the gays, and so should you. Hug ’em. Love ’em. Fight for ’em. The sad truth is that the U.S. population is not reflected in our congressional representation. That’s why I delved into activism: We need more people in office who reflect America as it is today, not just 75-year-old White men. We need men and women of color, more minorities and people from the LGBTQ community to represent this great melting pot. We’ve already seen many first-time Asian-American and African-American candidates get elected. Let’s make this wave unstoppable.

Women, Don’t Be Afraid to Show Some Muscle

Let me strong-arm you. I used to think weightlifting would make me bulk up too much because I’m naturally muscular. Wow, was I wrong. I got in the best shape ever by lifting heavy weights. Most trainers told me to do high reps with low weights. But the minute I started doing heavy weights and lower reps I really leaned out. My trainer is not a big dynamo, but he’s helped make me so strong — and at 43, stronger than I’ve ever been. So pick up some weight.
