    Far-Right Defeated in French Run-Off Elections

French voters answered the socialists’ call yesterday, delivering a blow to Marine Le Pen’s National Front (FN), which had dominated last week’s preliminary elections. Instead, Nicholas Sarkozy’s conservative opposition took the lead, with the anti-immigration FN failing to win a single region after ruling socialists strategically pulled out of key races. Le Pen accused rivals of collusion but noted the FN’s “inexorable rise” — they garnered at least 20 percent of votes in all but three regions — vowing, “Nothing can stop us now.”
