    U.S. Strike Reportedly Kills Terrorist Leader

    He’s slipped through their nets before. So while the Libyan government says Mokhtar Belmokhtar, former chief of al-Qaida’s operations in the Maghreb and now leader of a splinter group, died in a targeted U.S. air attack in the eastern city of Ajdabiya, the Americans aren’t so sure. Washington confirmed that Belmokhtar — who’s been reported dead multiple times and was the mastermind behind the deadly 2013 gas field attack in Algeria — was the target. But while they say they think he’s been killed, they won’t declare victory without forensic proof of his death.
