Crimea has spoken, and it’s not good news for anyone hoping to see an end to the Cold War-style crisis brewing in Ukraine. More than 90 percent have reportedly voted in favor of Crimea joining Russia, according to exit polls. Western leaders said last week that such a vote would violate both Ukraine’s constitution and international law. But Russian leader Vladimir Putin told German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday that Moscow considers the referendum legal and plans to respect Crimea’s wishes. European leaders will meet Monday to discuss further sanctions, but such measures seem to be proving trivial to the Russian leadership.
