For more than half a century, it stared down the world's biggest power and survived an economic blockade while building an impressive health and education system. But it was also the theater for tense Cold War standoffs, intervened militarily in other nations and has seen its socialist economy collapse in recent years. The country is now opening up slowly in a bid to save its economy.
