Racial Justice in Education: The Civil Rights Issue of Our Time

What is the issue that Bush-era Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, progressive representative Katie Porter, Trump Advisor Mica Mosbacher and BLM activist Chi Ossé can agree on? The need for a more just #education system. For the next episode of Real Talk, Real Change from The Carlos Watson Show and #Chevrolet, we take a unique look at education in America. After a pandemic year that forced us to rethink our education systems, is this the perfect time to build back greater education justice, from policing in schools to equity in funding? Along with hearing from celebrities and policy experts, we sit down with those most impacted — students, teachers and parents to hear their thoughts on how we reset American education. Our gracious hosts, the students, parents and staff of Summit Public Schools served as a microcosm of what is possible in equitable education for all. Cameras rolled on Seattle’s Summit Sierra, a diverse and driven high school that empowers and prepares students for success in college and to be thoughtful, contributing members of society. Finally, a special thanks to our Consulting Producer, Cami Anderson, a former NY and NJ Superintendent and founder of various non profit organizations dedicated to youth and students. Anderson helped steer creative as we navigated through the most important issues in today’s education system.

Introducing Real Talk, Real Change | The Carlos Watson Show

A lot of those kids trapped at bad public schools are minority kids. That for me is the civil rights issue of our time.

      — Dr. Condoleezza Rice

We don't know what our kids are capable of because their education sometimes is so limiting, particularly in Black and brown classrooms.

      — Dr. Danielle Moss

It would be a better country for all of us if Black children and white children got equal education and had equal opportunities.

      — Representative Katie Porter
