Why you should care
“This dude is crazy talented, man!”
Forget about James Arthur’s shabby style — the capri pants, the karate shoes, the five o’clock shadow. His voice is why you want to watch him singing Bonnie Raitt’s classic “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” That and the passion pouring off of him. The clip shows Arthur getting his big break on TV’s X Factor UK back in 2012, before he went on to win the show, top the charts and team up with judge Nicole Scherzinger.
But back then, when fame was nothing more than a glint in Arthur’s eye, the would-be balladeer had to make the judges see past the look, and listen. As OZY’s own Breed riffs, Arthur had to face Ne-Yo sitting back in his red pants and red hat, looking suspect. But once Arthur laid into it, Phillip says, the contest may as well have ended right there.
Turn it up and judge for yourself.
