A Senior Sex Tape PSA
WHY YOU SHOULD CARE
Seniors have sex, too, guys.
Nobody wants to think of their parents (or worse, grandparents) getting it on.
However, the truth is, they are. Getting it on. A higher life expectancy means people are in better health and living longer … and having sex for longer. “Retirement communities and assisted living facilities are becoming like college campuses,” oncologist Ezekiel J. Emanuel writes in The New York Times. “They cram a lot of similarly aged people together, and when they do, things naturally happen.” Even apps are starting to catch up with seniors looking to date.
…a funny, outlandish public service announcement showing fully clothed seniors acting out…
Since seniors don’t have to worry about pregnancy, they are less likely to use condoms — especially, Emanuel points out, those who grew up prior to the safe-sex era. The 2010 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior reports that condoms are used in only 6 percent of sexual encounters among those 61+ years old.
What comes next? Sexually transmitted diseases, of course. Rates for diseases like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis have doubled for people above the age of 50. HIV is on the rise as well. Despite these numbers, public health awareness campaigns don’t often target seniors, and doctors shy away from talking about safe sex with their senior patients.
Here comes Florida (obviously) to the rescue, with a funny, outlandish public service announcement showing fully clothed seniors acting out different sex positions. Halfway through the video, a message explains that STDs among seniors have risen 71 percent in the state. “While there are many ways to do it,” the PSA reads, “there’s only one way to do it safely. Use a condom.”
The video is hilarious and informative, if not completely disturbing. If you need to google your favorite celebrity in a swimsuit to get these images out of your mind, nobody will blame you.
