R. Sanders (Sandy) Williams, M.D.

With kids of coworkers

Born to a newspaper family, physician-scientist Sandy Williams studied public policy, medicine, and molecular biology at Princeton, Duke, Harvard and Oxford. He has cared for patients as a cardiologist, discovered in the lab how genes are switched on by exercise, and headed up two medical schools (at the same time!) as Duke’s Dean in North Carolina and in Singapore. Today he runs the Gladstone Institutes – a think tank and innovation lab in San Francisco working to solve big problems in medicine – when he’s not sporting his custom-made hiking boots in New Zealand’s south island alps, Bhutan’s Himalayas or some other challenging mountain range.
