Why you should care
Because the woman who had American security resting solely on her shoulders has a few things to say about the threats we face today — and the ones we’ll face tomorrow.
OZY co-founder and CEO Carlos Watson sat down this week for a rare interview with Janet Napolitano, the current president of the University of California system and the former secretary of homeland security (and possible next Attorney General?). Across from her offices in Oakland, California, they discussed her affinity for the Phoenix Suns, the changing nature of higher education and immigration and security policy.
In the first part of the interview (above), Napolitano tells Watson that though many of the gaps that led to 9/11 have been plugged, there’s no true way of telling how safe we really are today.
In part two (below), she says that her inability to pass immigration reform was a “failure” and calls out three things that could help us move forward from the current immigration standstill: President Obama’s executive authority, visa reform and a certain former Florida governor named Jeb Bush.
