A Rainbow of Hate

Because wars are rarely won quickly.

NBC estimates New York saw 2 million revelers, San Francisco around 1 million, with Apple’s Tim Cook leading 8,000 employees in celebration. London, where same-sex marriage was passed by Parliament in 2013, making it somewhat old hat? It saw tens of thousands show up.

But beyond the huzzahs, hurrahs and general merriment at consenting adults being able to consent to the same sorts of things that other consenting adults have been consenting to for ages, there’s been a largely significant failure to look around and see who is NOT celebrating.

Not the usual suspects. Not Rick Santorum, Ted Cruz and the rest of the strident and ardently opposed Republicans who will not be swayed even in the face of unexpected supporters like former President George H.W. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and former presidential candidate and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman. But the outsiders with heads full of bad thoughts.

Tom Metzger at Resist.com conflates sexual preference with an America beset on all sides by mud people, Jews and “faggots.” The KKK declares Dylann Roof a warrior. Others and sundry hate groups — though their numbers have been shrinking, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit specializing in civil rights — are girding for battle while you’re reading what we’ve written.

So are celebrations really what we should be having now? We wonder.
