WHY YOU SHOULD CARE
Because being Person of the Year isn’t always a positive.

We recently asked: Who lost the biggest in 2017? You answered, and here are your thoughts, edited for clarity.
Kyle Thornton, Oakland, California
I believe the biggest losers of 2017 were the citizens of America. It matters little how it happened as the end result is what we must endure each day. Donald Trump is the most despicable human being on the planet. He values nothing. He cares for nothing. He exhibits classic narcissistic personality disorder. For whatever reason, many individuals are enamored with him. What we’ve lost as Americans is our sense of identity and purpose.
Michael Prouty, Anchor Point, Alaska
The NFL, through not standing for the national anthem, and so losing a huge number of fans and sponsors.
Ramon A. Rivera, El Paso, Texas
1. The media.
2. Hollywood.
Michael D. Hansen
The biggest losers: the people who voted for Hillary Clinton for POTUS. They have all lost their minds along with their common sense!
Michael Lester
Winners: rich Americans, due to Trump signing the tax bill. Losers: various formerly powerful men accused of sexual harassment.
Suzanne Bailey
It’s really hard to say who’s the biggest loser of the year in the U.S. After the change in administration at the White House in January, and the subsequent legislative actions, executive orders, and public rants and threats by President Trump and his cohorts, I would say that U.S. citizens are the biggest losers of the year due to the results … and the consequences of the actions that they have taken/signed. The environment and the economy will be the second-biggest losers.
The American people were the biggest losers…
J.J. Westberg, Hesperia, California
Biggest winner: Donald Trump. Biggest losers: the American people.
Carl Youngman, Newton, Massachusetts
Has the world begun to realize that the United Nations has become a big loser as well? They provide no substantive help for nations, and their longest war is unaddressed (the Korean War is a U.N. initiative!).
Maryjane McLaren, McAllen, Texas
The American people were the biggest losers the day we lost the best president ever and were stricken with the worst imaginable, the least competent, the most embarrassing [president] possible.
Francine Martin
The American people are the biggest winners of 2017 — we have elected a president who is doing the things he was elected to do. He is performing in spectacular fashion; he has been blessed with a way with people, even after his less than glittery beginning. President Trump: God bless you to stay strong and keep doing the will of the people!
Dan Ehrlich, London
The biggest loser was U.S. democracy, because the election of Trump exposed the archaic nature of our electoral system where a handful of votes in a couple of states can overturn a sizable popular majority. Our primary campaign system was revealed to be corrupt and open to fraud: We have a morally and psychologically unbalanced narcissist president because the DNC committed suicide.
Yet the saddest part is that America, a nation where the ability to change and revise our system, [which] helped make us great, no longer exists. The only thing changing in America today is our population size and demographics. We won’t change our system. And the rather undemocratic election of a megalomaniac only follows the historic pattern of nations in decline.
