According to Wikipedia, the word pencil comes from the Old French pincel, which came from the Latin penicillus, which means a “little tail,” which means pencils in some form have been around, like, forever. But kids are texting, swiping and Snapchatting like crazy these days, and Rupert Murdoch’s company Amplify is pushing a new tablet aimed at the classroom, as are other companies. So OZY got to thinking: Do we really need pencils anymore? Wouldn’t it be better to switch kids to new technologies? We headed to the street and got some answers.
