Home to 160 million people, Bangladesh is dense with people — and images.

It was a cruel epithet. Decades ago, Henry Kissinger called Bangladesh the “basket case” of South Asia, and unfortunately, the phrase has had staying power. Since then, though, Bangladesh’s challenges have shifted. Climate change and rising seas threaten this low-lying land and the 160 million people who live in it. And although the poverty rate has shrunk, there is still a long way to go — including for the workers who stitch clothes for consumers in developing countries.

Amid all this? Bangladeshis get on with the business and joy of life, as shown in these photographs by Alfredo Casas, a Spanish-Colombian journalist.
