WHAT TO WATCH

The Bisexual — What If Girls Were Better and Less Whitewashed? Writer-director-actress Desiree Akhavan had a feel-good hit earlier this year with coming-out coming-of-age film The Miseducation of Cameron Post. But the real treasure is The Bisexual, which premiered on Hulu this month, in which Akhavan gets to flex her comedic muscles playing a woman who breaks up with her girlfriend after a decade and finds herself navigating the world of dating men. Akhavan squares off against stigmatization of bisexuals while delivering incredible physical comedy. (Recommended by Fiona Zublin, Here to Make Friends)

Terrace HouseBig Brother But Not Terrible. Wholesome reality TV is the future, and you can watch it on Netflix. The premise of this Japanese show: Three men and three women are living their normal daily lives, but they have to live in a house together. The cinematography is especially perfect. If you can’t get enough (and you won’t be able to), check out No Script at All, a podcast where two friends talk through every episode. (Recommended by Sean Culligan, Home Improver)

Suspiria — Better Than the Original? It’s hard to top the 1977 Dario Argento horror classic, but this remake is phenomenal, as is Tilda Swinton playing three separate roles. The new film has been reset in 1970s Berlin and explores not just a creepy ballet school full of witches but Cold War German society as well. (Recommended by Eugene Robinson, Dance Fanatic)

WHAT TO LISTEN TO

Believed — Hard to Hear. So far there are six episodes of this NPR and Michigan Radio podcast that delves deep into the case of disgraced U.S. gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. Warning: It’s a tough listen and not a podcast to try while running or cleaning the kitchen. But it is worth your time. Tough, in-depth reporting exposes new corners of the Nassar scandal, exploring how he managed to fool so many people for so long while molesting hundreds of young women, sometimes in their homes or even while their parents were in the room. (Recommended by Theresa Sun, Truth Seeker)

Hysteria — All Women All the Time. Toxic masculinity is threatening to engulf the world in flames but is also being called out like never before. So anyone tired of cisgender White men taking up too much bandwidth can find an aural safe space with this podcast, hosted by Erin Gloria Ryan. Ryan and her rotating cast of female co-hosts discuss — and mock, as is so often needed — the seemingly never-ending dumpster fire of the news. But not just the news: They also discuss free food and whether cinnamon-flavored gum should be allowed. (Recommended by Janet Minichiello, Cat Person)

WHAT TO EAT

Café Jacqueline — A Breath of Fresh Air. Get ready for soufflé, because if you’re going to Café Jacqueline, you are having soufflé. This tiny upscale San Francisco French eatery has a single chef, Jacqueline, to whom you should introduce yourself as you pass through the kitchen on your way to the bathrooms. She’s the one who’ll be making the best soufflés of your life. They’re enormous cloudlike affairs that serve at least two and probably four people — which is good, at $28-$60 per soufflé. Go for the Roquefort (or the cauliflower, if blue cheese isn’t your thing), though you could shell out for the lobster if you want. We won’t judge you for ordering the most expensive thing on the menu.

What’s next? Another soufflé, duh. For dessert, you have a huge number of options, but our favorites are lemon and Grand Marnier. Enjoy the fancy dessert spoons to eat it straight out of the dish, then fight your tablemates for the last spoonfuls of pillowy sweetness. (Recommended by Wade Best, Dessert King)

AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T DO THIS …

Buy into a hoax. Artist Joe Reginella just finished his latest work: A monument to a fictional, supposedly infamous 1977 alien abduction in New York’s Battery Park. Of course, it’s only infamous if you buy into the art project, which includes a statue of a man and an alien, along with a documentary and tourist paraphernalia. (Gothamist)
