The series of blasts hit Easter services, also injuring hundreds of worshipers, while explosions — attributed to suicide bombers — also ripped through luxury hotels. Foreigners were among the dead. Most of the eight attacks, at churches and hotels, were in Colombo, the capital. Churches in nearby Negombo and the eastern city of Batticaloa were also hit.
Who might be responsible? No claims have surfaced, but the country is still recovering after a 26-year civil war ended in 2009 with the defeat of Tamil separatists. Authorities say they’ve detained seven people, but haven’t identified them.
