Lighting-fast developments in robotics and artificial intelligence are changing the face of war. Scenarios once considered straight out of science fiction are now no longer so far-fetched. Robots won’t just be fighting on the front lines. With the rise of automated weapons, and AI-powered surveillance tools, the decision to make war could shift out of the hands of humans entirely.
Already, modern conflict has moved online with non-state groups, activists and private corporations in many cases moving faster than governments. This digital landscape is also proving to be fertile ground for the recruitment and radicalization of terrorists. The new breed of Internet warrior will battle it out online, prying open computer networks to hack on their opponents and find ways to sabotage their rival defense networks. Civilian infrastructure, like power, water, even the Internet itself, is in the crosshairs as the Internet of things continues to stitch together every object of modern life.
Many fear this new paradigm could spiral out of control at terrifying speeds. The hows and whys of war will go out the window, leading some to argue that humanity needs new rules of war. In this latest installment of PredicTED, witness the brave new world of conflicts waged with code and fought by machines. But when robots go to war, will humans be there to keep the peace?
