Why you should care

Because this pro football player proves that even under the craziest of circumstances, anything is possible.

An ongoing OZY series with life lessons, great stories and advice from OZY co-founder Carlos Watson.

Denard Robinson is one of the most successful running backs to come out of the University of Michigan and now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In his second season, he led the Jaguars in rushing (582 yards) — all the while playing with a crazy, self-imposed disadvantage.

His shoes remain firmly untied.

Yep, that’s right. Since he was a kid, Robinson has refused to rely on something as mundane and fundamental as shoelaces. His success on the field is hubristic, ridiculous and, well, magical.
